Indonesian President calls for "long overdue guidelines" for South China Sea

Opening the meeting of foreign ministers of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Bali, Indonesia's president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has urged the member nations to agree a code of conduct for disputes in the South China Sea.

"We need to finalise those long overdue guidelines because we need to get moving to the next phase," he said. "We need to send a strong signal to the world that the future of the South China Sea is a predictable, manageable and optimistic one."
